Vision beyond Sight

Optional Activity

VISIONS/Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired is a nonprofit vision rehabilitation and social service organization founded in 1926. They provide services free of charge for people of all ages who are legally blind or severely visually impaired. In this BLUE HAWK Gives Back project, we’ll work together to clean, prepare, and paint the walls of VISONS’ common space rooms, creating a refreshed and smooth canvas for an upcoming community mural.

VISIONS/Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired is a nonprofit vision rehabilitation and social service organization founded in 1926. They provide services free of charge for people of all ages who are legally blind or severely visually impaired. Service areas include children and youth, adults, seniors, employment and job placement, healthy living, volunteer services, social networking, senior center, caregiver support program, in-home vision rehabilitation, residential rehabilitation center and community outreach and training. VISIONS provides outreach, information and services in low income, ethnic minority communities and in buildings with concentrations of frail, low-income elders throughout New York City. VISIONS purpose is to develop and implement individualized programs to assist people who are blind and visually impaired of all ages to lead independent and active lives, and to educate the public to understand their capabilities and needs.

The Gives Back Project: In this BLUE HAWK Gives Back project, we’ll work together to clean, prepare, and paint the walls of VISONS’ common space rooms, creating a refreshed and smooth canvas for an upcoming community mural. By the end of the day, you’ll witness the transformation of the area, knowing your efforts have helped foster connection and celebrate community.

On this historical tour of New York, we make our way in a loop around the NYC Lower East Side, seeing 100-year old bakeries, churches, and historic sites. We stroll the streets of Little Italy just as Lucky Luciano might have a century ago. Marvel at former and still operating synagogues and Jewish clothing stores. We dive into the culture remembered at places such as the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and the African Burial Ground, and the exciting streets of Chinatown, where you feel like you’re in Shanghai!

Along the way, we sink our teeth into amazing stories and amazing food. Knishes, prosciutto, dumplings, and more. We taste why New York City is the center of the world and the culinary legacy left here by those that have passed by Lady Liberty on their way to fulfill the American Dream.
